South Kerry Championship 2005

Waterville 0-09 St. Mary's 1-05
A large crowd flocked to Waterville sportsfield on Saturday 19th November to witness the much anticipated clash between last year's finalists St. Mary’s and Waterville. Though this was a preliminary round it attracted huge interest from all parts of South Kerry. It was heartening to see some former Waterville players make long journeys from their current places of abode to lend their support to the current crop of men in red and white.
Conditions were ideal if crisp for the time of year and Waterville played with the assistance of the slight breeze into the lake goal in the first half.
With less than two minutes played, wing back Haulie Courtney was called on to convert a free from the right side near the stand, which he did with ease. Bryan Sheehan for St. Mary’s levelled matters within a minute when two Waterville players were adjudged to have fouled the ball between them.
The experienced Denis O’Dwyer took a quick free to Patrick Curran in the fourth minute after a foul on Gearoid Ó’Sullivan and Waterville were again in front. Keith Moran who started in the corner forward position got his name on the score sheet in the seventh minute after a good pass from John D. O’Shea.
From an early stage it was obvious that the O’Sullivan brothers were getting the upper hand at midfield which was to prove crucial to the eventual outcome. Waterville were getting on top in most sectors but Bryan Sheehan kept is side in touch with another free in the tenth minute. This was to be their final score of the half.

Senior County Championship Sunday 13th November 2005
South Kerry 0-12 Dr. Crokes 1-06
South Kerry Seniors made it two in a row on Sunday 13th Nov at Fitzgerald Stadium when they took on the men from Dr. Crokes, Killarney in this year's County Senior Championship.
Maurice Fitzgerald kicked the first score of the game after two and a half minutes and fellow St Mary's player Brian Sheehan followed with another in the fourth minute. Both teams made a subdued start and there was a distinct sign of nerves. Keeper mark Drummond made a crucial block in the seventh minute and stopped what seemed a certain Crokes goal. South Kerry weren't to score again 'till the twenty fourth minute through a Brian Sheehan free. They added two more before the interval but Crokes began to settle and after Colm Cooper opened their account with a free in the eleventh minute they finished the half with four points and were but a single point in arrears.
It would take a brave punter to call it at haf time but on the resumption the old master Maurice Fitz put on a display which on its own, justified the entrance fee and showed that he has a lot still left in his bag of tricks. Within three minutes he had bagged two points, one of which defies adequate description.
Fitzgerald set the tone for the rest of his team mates and they didn't disappoint. South Kerry took control until a long ball into the South Kerry area ended in the net with the assistance of Colm Cooper and suddenly the sides were level. Brian Sheehan put his side in front again through a fine free and Ronan Hussey followed with another shortly afterwards. Brian Hickey who had been introduced as a sub made a sally upfield two minutes later and got his nane on the score sheet. In the space of five minutes South Kerry had notched three points and though there was still ten minutes of play left the result was becoming apparent. Both teams exchanged points before the end and South Kerry had the Bishop Moynihan trophy for the second year in a row. Maurice Fitz was the the crucial factor once again.
We congratulate coach, James O'Sullivan (St. Mary's) and his co-selectors Johnny Walsh and Johnny Teahen.

The South Kerry Minor League final between Waterville and Ballinskelligs was played at noon on Sunday 9th October in Renard. Conditions were damp and heavy but both teams served up an enthralling game of football.
Almost straight away Waterville lost Brendan Dennehy, one of their midfielders through injury and was replaced by Adrian Walsh.
Ballinskelligs were first to get on the score sheet after two minutes with a free but Waterville’s Patrick Curran had a point for his side after riding a few tackles and almost immediately the same player had the ball in the net after a good pass from midfielder Denis Donnelly. Ballinskelligs’s David King had a fine long range point for his side in the tenth minute. From the kick out the ball arrived to Donncha Fenton who took on his opponent but his shot hit the crossbar to the relief of the Ballinskelligs supporters. Report

Under 14 South Kerry "A"
Final
Waterville 4-06 Dromid Pearses 3-09
The final of the under 14 South Kerry A championship between Waterville and Dromid Pearses ended in a draw at the Waterville sports field on Saturday last the 4th of June 2005. The large attendance present certainly got value for money from this most entertaining game played in fine but windy conditions. Waterville playing with the aid of a strong wind in the first half opened the scoring on seven minutes when Micheal Croinin found Barry O Dwyer with a great long range pass, which Barry finished to the back of the net. This game continued to ebb and flow with both sides playing some excellent football. Stephen O Dwyer notched up three goals and two points and Barry O Dwyer added two further points to leave the half time score Waterville 3-3 Dromod Pearses 1-3. Dromid Pearses aided by the wind opened the scoring of the second half following some good work and by the twentieth minute of the second half had taken a two point lead on a score of 3-7 to 3-5. However Waterville fought back bravely and went into a one point lead 4-6 to 3-8 as the game entered the final minutes. A long range point from Dromods Niall Shea ended this game in a draw which was probably the fairest result for both of these young teams who had given there all. Replay on Tuesday next at 7:30.

County League: Round 4 Versus Currow (Saturday April 16th 2005)
Currow 1-09 Waterville 0-11
In Round 4 of the County League Waterville travelled to Currow to take on the locals. Conditions while cool, were ideal for football.
Straight from the throw in Currow had a point on the board but within two minutes Paddy Curran levelled the scores through a free, after a foul on himself. Within a minute Gary Galvin made a critical interception at centre back and sent a long ball to John D O'Shea who was also fouled and the resultant free sent Waterville into the lead. Again a minute later it was young Curran who doubled the lead after good work by Alan O'Shea and Keith Moran. Report

County League: Round 3 Versus Dromid April 9th 2005
Waterville 0-07 Dromid Pearses 1-06
In blustery, cool conditions at Waterville, the local boys took on their fellow parishioners and current South Kerry Champs Dromid Pearses.
This promised to be a close encounter and it certainly lived up to this expectation. Dromid had wind advantage in the first half and but for some good defending by the likes of young Kevin O’Dwyer and erratic shooting by Dromid, Waterville could have been at least four or five points in arrears within ten minutes of the throw in.
Kieran Bobby O’Sullivan finally opened the scoring in the 13th minute through a free after Mike Curran was adjudged to have fouled his immediate opponent, John Curran. Paddy Curran levelled matters four minutes later with a point from play after some terrific work by Fergal Cronin.
Every ball was being eagerly contested and in spite of both teams having opportunities, we had to wait until the 25th minute for the next score when Colm O’Connor sent Dromid into the lead with an excellently struck shot after some intense pressure. Report |
Dromid player Kevin O'Leary made this ball his own in spite of the close attention of Kevin O'Dwyer and Buddy O'Shea.

Every ball was contested with vigour and determination between two well matched teams
.
The reds put on pressure in the second half and managed to draw level with four minutes left but Dromid scored two more points before the final whistle to secure the spoils. |
Club Presentations
(March 4th 2005)
On
Friday evening Mar 4th, a function was held in the Waterville
Inn to present our young footballers with their medals which
were won during the 2004 season. It was also an opportunity

as Senior Player of 2004. He was chosen for this honour due
to his tenacity on the field of play, his dedication to training
and the consistency of his play throughout the whole year.

Making the presentations to the young players was our own local
hero, Denis O'Dwyer who has a collection of All Ireland medals
second to none. Denis is a great example to all our under age
players and if they take example from him they will achieve great
heights in their sporting exploits.
Club chairman Paddy Fogarty presented Denis with a gift in recognition of his
long dedication and commitment to the club. |
